If you are reading this, there is a high chance you work on a computer for a large amount of your day. If you don’t, there is still a high chance you are looking at a screen for some part for your day.

Prevention for Eye Strain – Looking at screens all day can make you tired and more specifically make your eyes tired. Here are ways to prevent this kind of eye strain:

  1. Take breaks – according to Good Vision for Life, you should take regular breaks. Use the 20/20/20 rule: every 20 minutes, shift your eyes to look at an object at least 20 feet away (six metres), for at least 20 seconds
  2. Blink More – Those flash minutes when you blink may not seem like a lot but this split second where your eyes are covered gives your brain a chance to rest. Blinking keeps your eyes lubricated, when you don’t blink your eyes will dry out more often.
  3. Font Colour and Size – What font you choose makes a significant impact on how much eye strain you endure. Many fonts are not ideal for constant and repeated use. Choosing a font other then Arial or Helvetica can potentially make more a of a difference then you know
  4. Brightness – A lot of the time our brightness on our laptops, phone screen or desktops is way to high. High brightness accelerates eye strain, finding the right balance of brightness for you will significantly help. Be sure not to lower your brightness to the point you are straining to see your screen
  5. Dark/Reader Mode – In a lot of apps you have the option of a mode called Dark Mode which makes reading easier, it also adjusts the brightness on a software level. This is easier on the eyes in both daytime and night time
  6. Posture – You should be looking at your monitor front-on at eye level or slightly below. Most screens will look slightly different from some angles, colours shift and glare hits differently. 50-60cm away from your screen is the ideal space, this helps you to be able to see your entire screen and not have to search around your screen. This saves your eyes motion and wear
  7. Anti Blue – There are blue-light monitors that can be attached to your monitor or glasses that have an anti glare film over the lens that will filter out the light. The anti-blue light coating can also be applied to prescription glasses, consult with your eye specialist for this

Eye strain is very common among people and these few steps can help significantly in reducing the extent and frequency of eye strain.
