At ABILITY GROUP, we understand the importance of maintaining safe and compliant workplaces. In each state & territory, there are different governing bodies. In NSW, a key government body created to help ensure compliant workplaces is the State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA). We therefore explain what SIRA is and what SIRA employer supervision.

What is SIRA?

The State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA) is an independent regulatory NSW government body. SIRA oversees various insurance schemes, including workers’ compensation, compulsory third-party (CTP) insurance, and home building compensation. SIRA’s primary goal is to ensure these schemes are fair, affordable, and effective for both policyholders and claimants.

What is SIRA employer supervision?

SIRA adopts a risk-based approach to supervise employers in NSW. This means SIRA focus its efforts on areas where it can have the greatest impact. Here’s how they do it:

  • Employer Classification – SIRA classifies employers based on several factors, including employer size, industry, insurance arrangements, compliance history, claims history, premiums, wages, and return-to-work performance. This classification helps SIRA tailor its supervision and response activities to the specific risks associated with each employer
  • Customised Monitoring – SIRA conducts both proactive and responsive supervision activities. They target employers where these activities will have the most significant impact. This includes regular inspections and audits to ensure compliance with workers’ compensation and injury management obligations
  • Compliance and Enforcement – to ensure compliance, SIRA uses a range of tools as part of its regulatory approach. Inspectors may visit employers to verify that they have effective return-to-work systems in place and are meeting their workplace injury management obligations. This helps achieve optimal results for a safe and durable return to work for injured employees
  • Education and Support – SIRA also provides education and support initiatives to help employers understand their obligations and improve their compliance. This includes resources, training, and guidance to ensure employers are well-equipped to manage workplace injuries and return-to-work processes effectively

Why is SIRA’s Supervision Important?

SIRA inspectors and associated supervision are intended to help maintain safe and compliant NSW workplaces. By ensuring employers meet their workers’ compensation and injury management obligations, SIRA helps protect employees and promote a culture of safety and wellbeing, leading to better outcomes for both employers and employees.
