In 2021, SIRA developed the workers compensation guidelines for the approval of hearing services providers. This framework, if approved, aims to help hearing service providers support workers by delivering better treatment services and achieve better outcomes for employees with work-related hearing loss.

These new guidelines align to work together with other health providers to improve the health, quality of life as well as improve work capabilities of people.

A consultation was open on September 2021 to gain feedback on these guidelines. Some outcomes of submissions published on January 2022 include:

  • The new guidelines are fit for purpose to ensure experienced and appropriately qualified hearing service providers can help businesses support their workers with work-related hearing loss.

Under workers compensation legislation, the worker’s employers are not liable for costs if the person providing treatment/services is not appropriately qualified.

  • To address level of services in regional and rural NSW
  • Provide clarity of relationship between providers and law firms to reduce conflict of interest

The final version of the guidelines is expected to be completed by July 2022.
