NSW Parliament recently approved changes to workers compensation and motor accidents legislation to provide greater support to volunteers, children of those involved in fatal workplace accidents and road users. Customer Service and Digital Government Minister Victor Dominello believes the changes are important step forward.
On 8th June 2022, legislations for workers compensation and motor vehicles were updated to help volunteer rescue workers and drivers injured or killed in workplace accidents and provide support for their families.
The gap between workers compensation entitlements for volunteers and paid fire workers became apparent during recent bushfires. This has led to the overhaul in laws so that volunteers and their families can have the same benefits as paid workers. This includes access to provisional liability, funeral costs and return to work/training costs.
Statutory benefits are also now available for injured road users where no driver is at fault.
