In warehouses, factories, shipping yards, freight terminals and other workplaces across Australia, forklifts are used to lift, stack and transfer loads. While forklifts offer a practical materials handling solution for many businesses, each year they continue to be associated with workplace deaths and injuries.

As forklifts must be maneuverable, they are designed to be compact, but when carrying loads they can become unstable under certain circumstances. Fully laden, a standard two tonne forklift can weigh approximately five tonnes in total.

Given the percentage of recent devastating fatalities and to reduce the risks, 30 SafeWork NSW safety inspectors will visit over 600 workplaces across the state to provide educational material and perform forklift safety checks until the end of July.

Main goal is to build strong working relationships and engage a culture of forklift safety. Fines will be issued for safety breaches if businesses and drivers are caught doing the wrong thing.
