Most Dangerous Jobs – Irrespective of the size of your business or industry, workplace risks exist. Businesses that adopt a proactive risk management approach will typically minimise workplace risks, injuries and claims. Regrettably accidents do occur and in tragic situations the death of a worker has impacts beyond the obvious. Fatalities in the workplace not only affect the immediate family, they also cause distress to colleagues, employers and friends.
Based on SafeWork data, what are the most dangerous Australian industries to work in:
- Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing – during the last 4 years business have been proven to have the highest risk jobs in Australia. In 2017 there was 52 fatalities and 3,620 serious injuries – that’s 16.5 fatalities per 100,000 employees and 17.5 serious injuries per 1,000 employees.
- Transport, Postal & Warehousing – With 54 fatalities and 8,330 serious injuries in the transport, postal and warehousing industry which is up 15% on the previous year. It is anticipated that the danger for the transport, postal and warehousing injuries will grow in the coming years with the boom in online shopping and the popularity of food deliveries via apps.
- Construction – perhaps somewhat surprising is the Construction industry is only the third most dangerous industry in Australia with 30 deaths and 13,280 serious injuries.

In 2015, 2016 and 2017 there has been 387 fatalities in the 3 industries alone. That is more then twice the other industries combined. 190 workers died across all industries and 176 (93%) were men. Over 60% involved vehicle-related accidents (Road/Forklifts). 15% involved heights.
NSW was the top state in 2017 with the most fatalities at work (62) and ACT was the safest with one fatality. Workers aged 55 – 64 were the most common age group where fatalities occurred in 2017.
