In Australia, the rate of skin cancer is the highest in the world and Australian businesses have a duty to protect their outdoor workers from ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Properly planning by providing suitable shade, systems of work and personal protective equipment is essential in reducing the risk of this exposure as we head into summer.
To ensure a safe workplace for you and your employees and prevent UV radiation exposure risks these strategies will go a long way.
Strategies to Decrease Sun Exposure
- Protective Clothing: Provide outdoor workers with appropriate clothing such as long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses with UV protection. All clothing items must be made of fabric that has a UV protection factor of 50+ and an Australian government sun-protecting rating swing tag attached to show compliance.
- Shade Provision: Create shaded areas or break zones where employees are not as exposed to the sun, especially during breaks and rest periods.
- Flexible Schedules: Rotate outdoor workers regularly to decrease their length of exposure to UV radiation. If possible try to plan and/or reschedule work schedules so outdoor work is completed when UV radiation levels are lower or they’re done in shaded areas when UV radiation levels are 3 and above.
- Hydration: Promote frequent water breaks to prevent heat-related illnesses. Provide access to clean, cold drinking water on-site.
To protect both employees’ health and the company’s interests, it is crucial for employers to prioritize sun safety in the workplace. By implementing these strategies and fostering a culture of sun safety, employers can ensure that their workers remain safe and healthy while working under the Australian sun. Together, we can reduce the risks associated with UV radiation and continue to enjoy the beauty of our great outdoors.
