Breaking News – COVID-19 NSW Workers Compensation Legislation Change – At the time of writing the State Insurance regulatory Authority’s (SIRA) website did not contain any information regarding these changes. NSW Parliament passed an amendment to workers compensation legislation on Wednesday 13 May 2020. After more than a day of debate & several amendments the new law means these identified workers will no longer have to prove they were not infected with the COVID-19 Coronavirus virus elsewhere in the community to have a accept workers compensation claim.
The changes will cover all workers in industries including:
- health
- education
- hospitality
- entertainment
- construction &
- retail industries
This could result in increases in workers compensation premiums due to increases in claim payments that will be given to people who are infected by COVID-19. The scope of acceptance of these types of claims means that essential workers will no longer have to prove they were infected with COVID-19 at work to make a workers compensation claim.
