Fresh insights from Safe Work Australia’s Key Work Health and Safety Statistics 2025 report reveal that just a third of jobs account for more than half of all serious injury claims across the country. This alarming trend underscores the need for targeted safety interventions, especially in high-risk sectors, and presents a crucial opportunity for organisations like ABILITY GROUP to continue to lead the way in helping businesses create safer workplaces.
Most affected Industries
According to the report, Australia recorded 146,700 serious workers’ compensation claims in the past year. Four industries dominate the injury landscape:
- Health care and social assistance – 19.9% of serious claims
- Construction – 12%
- Manufacturing – 10.1%
- Public administration and safety – 9.2%
Together, these sectors represent over 50% of all serious injury claims, despite comprising only 36.3% of filled jobs covered by workers’ compensation schemes.
Common causes and fatality rates
The report also highlights that 188 workers lost their lives to traumatic injuries in 2024, equating to a fatality rate of 1.3 deaths per 100,000 workers. While this marks a 24% decrease since 2014, the figure remains troublingly high. Vehicle-related incidents continue to be the leading cause of workplace fatalities, with machinery operators and drivers facing the highest risks.
What this means for employers and safety advocates
For organisations like Ability Group, these findings reinforce the importance of proactive safety strategies. Employers in high-risk sectors must:
- Invest in comprehensive safety training
