Workplace Covid-19 infections in Australia could drive compensation costs up to $638M over the next year as restrictions ease in NSW.

Experts warn employers may face lawsuits from staff infected at work, with SIRA reporting 1,590 Covid-19 compensation claims since 2020, 1,198 linked to the Delta outbreak.. As at 31st of July 2021, $7.1 million had been paid by Insurers for Covid-19 related claims.

SIRA modelling, aligned with Doherty Institute projections, estimates Covid-19 costs post-NSW reopening at $638M, based on 80% adult vaccination.

Since the beginning of the pandemic up until 24 September this year, insurers have reported 1442 Covid-19 notifications and claims to SIRA.

SIRA data shows the highest Covid-19 exposure risks in supermarkets, police, takeaway food, hospitals, correctional services, department stores, aged care, and air/space transport.

As the economy has begun to reopen, employers must prepare to deal with a surge in cases and implement all available resources to minimise exposure and help stop the spread.
