We often get asked what’s a rehabilitation consultant. In short a workplace rehabilitation consultant is an allied health professional who works with employers, workers, and other stakeholders to support the rehabilitation and return to work of workers who have been injured or become ill as a result of their work.
The role of a workplace rehabilitation consultant typically involves:
- Conducting assessments: The consultant will conduct assessments of the injured or ill employee’s health status, functional capacity, and ability to perform work-related tasks.
- Developing rehabilitation plans: Based on the assessment, the consultant will develop rehabilitation plans that outline the steps required to support the employee’s return to work, including any modifications to work tasks, hours, or duties that may be required.
- Liaising with stakeholders: The consultant will work with the injured employee, their supervisor, treating health practitioners, and other stakeholders to coordinate the rehabilitation process and ensure that everyone is working towards the same goal.
- Providing education and support: The consultant will provide education and support to the injured employee, their supervisor, and other stakeholders on topics such as injury management, workplace health and safety, and the rights and responsibilities of all parties involved.
- Monitoring progress: The consultant will monitor the employee’s progress throughout the rehabilitation process, and make any necessary adjustments to the rehabilitation plan to ensure that the employee is able to return to work safely and successfully.
- Reporting and documentation: The consultant will prepare reports and documentation as required, including progress reports, return to work plans, and other relevant documentation.
Overall, the role of a workplace rehabilitation consultant is to support the injured or ill employee’s recovery and return to work, while also helping the employer to manage the impacts of the injury or illness on their business.
