Forklift safety can be enhanced through collaboration between workers and businesses. Forklifts are widely used in workplaces across Australia, but they are also responsible for numerous deaths and injuries each year, leading to significant financial and human costs. In February 2024, a Victorian company was fined $1.3M for Industrial Manslaughter resulting from a forklift-related death and so we wanted to highlight the importance of forklift safety.
SafeWork Australia provides detailed information regarding Forklift safety and guidelines for managing risks associated with operating powered forklifts in the workplace. Key points include:
- Training and Supervision:
- Operators must have a high-risk work forklift license.
- Training must be from a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
- Trainees can operate forklifts under direct supervision if enrolled in an RTO.
- Traffic Management:
- Separate pathways for pedestrians and forklifts to avoid collisions.
- Use high visibility work wear and minimize blind spots.
- Highlight intersections and maintain eye contact with pedestrians.
- Pre-Start Safety Check:
- Conduct checks on the forklift and attachments before use.
- Perform these checks at the start of each shift and when using a different forklift.
- Using Seatbelts:
- Always use seatbelts unless a risk assessment suggests otherwise.
- Seatbelts prevent being thrown from the seat during tip-overs.
- Lifting Attachments:
- Ensure the forklift has appropriate lifting attachments.
- Secure attachments as per the manufacturer’s instructions and provide specific training.
- Working Near Electric Lines:
- Maintain a safe distance from overhead and underground electric lines.
- Risks include electrocution, arcing, explosions, and cable whiplash.
- Operating a Forklift:
- Maintain clear visibility and drive at safe speeds.
- Avoid distractions and be aware of other vehicles and pedestrians.
- Follow safety protocols when loading/unloading and consider weather conditions.
- Preventing Tip-Overs:
- Avoid excessive speed, heavy braking, and overloading.
- Do not move with an elevated mast and load on sloping surfaces.
- Work Platforms and Boxes:
- Use forklifts with proper attachments to lift people.
- Ensure secure attachment of workboxes and perform test lifts before use.
