In the past 10 years, incidents relating to livestock and bulk rural transport have cost over $24 million in workers compensation claims with 217,000 hours of lost time injuries. Many of these incidents/injuries have occurred when the vehicle is not being driven. SafeWork targets livestock safety & rural transport.

SafeWork NSW Inspectors 2024 Focus

Later this year, SafeWork inspectors NSW will be conducting visits to transport businesses involved in livestock and bulk rural haulage to verify compliance with safety regulations.

Transport operators and businesses within the supply chain are advised to promptly review their work systems and communication protocols.

Employers can enhance safety measures by:

  • Implementing straightforward safety messaging during site inductions and traffic management planning.
  • Ensuring proper immobilization of vehicles at all times
  • Implementing measures to separate individuals, products, and machinery on-site
  • Conducting assessments of risk factors associated with tasks performed in proximity to vehicles
  • Conducting pre-attendance and safety assessments of sites
  • Requesting a complimentary advisory visit from an inspector to assist in enhancing safety practices

You don’t have to be in Livestock or rural transport to be at risk and this SafeWork focus is a active reminder for other businesses utilising transport.
