Forklifts are essential in warehouses, construction sites, and logistics operations, but they also pose serious risks when safety measures are overlooked. SafeWork NSW’s “Take Forking Seriously” campaign highlights the importance of proactive safety practices to reduce injuries and fatalities linked to forklift use
Why Forklift Safety Matters
Between July 2014 and July 2016, nearly 1,500 workers in New South Wales were injured in forklift incidents, including three fatalities. These accidents cost the state’s workers’ compensation system more than $30.5 million. The statistics underline the urgent need for businesses to prioritize forklift safety.
Key Safety Measures for Businesses
To prevent incidents and protect workers, businesses should adopt strict safety protocols:
- Traffic Management Plans: Separate pedestrians and vehicles with clear signage, designated walkways, and exclusion zones marked by cones, paint, or bollards.
- Licensing and Training: Ensure every forklift operator holds a valid license and receives ongoing training.
- Seat Belt Use: Operators must always wear seat belts to reduce injury risks.
- Loading and Unloading Zones: Establish exclusion areas during high-risk activities to keep pedestrians safe.
