Australia’s high skin cancer rate means businesses must shield outdoor workers from UV with shade, systems, and PPE.

These strategies help create a safer workplace and reduce UV exposure risks.

Strategies to Decrease Sun Exposure

  1. Protective Clothing: Provide outdoor workers with appropriate clothing such as long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses with UV protection. Clothing must use UPF 50+ fabric and display an approved sun protection tag.
  2. Shade Provision: Create shaded areas or break zones where employees are not as exposed to the sun, especially during breaks and rest periods.
  3. Flexible Schedules: Rotate outdoor workers regularly to decrease their length of exposure to UV radiation. If possible try to plan and/or reschedule work schedules so outdoor work is completed when UV radiation levels are lower or they’re done in shaded areas when UV radiation levels are 3 and above.
  4. Hydration: Promote frequent water breaks to prevent heat-related illnesses. Provide access to clean, cold drinking water on-site.

To protect both employees’ health and the company’s interests, it is crucial for employers to prioritize sun safety in the workplace. By implementing these strategies and fostering a culture of sun safety, employers can ensure that their workers remain safe and healthy while working under the Australian sun. Together, we can reduce the risks associated with UV radiation and continue to enjoy the beauty of our great outdoors.
