The food delivery industry has rapidly expanded as part of the gig economy, with riders using cars, scooters, motorbikes, and bicycles to deliver meals across New South Wales. While convenient for customers, this work exposes riders to road hazards, fatigue, and unsafe practices. SafeWork NSW has stepped in to strengthen protections and ensure riders are treated as workers under workplace health and safety laws

On 16 June 2022, the NSW Government enacted the Motor Accidents and Workers Compensation Legislation Amendment Act 2022. This legislation introduced important updates to motor accident and workers ‘compensation laws, ensuring fairer treatment and stronger protections for workers, volunteers, and their families.

In New South Wales, over half a million young people under 25 are part of the workforce, spanning industries from hospitality to construction. Unfortunately, more than 15,000 young workers are injured each year, costing around $60 million in workers’ compensation claims. These figures highlight the urgent need for employers to prioritise safety and provide the right support.
